Home by the Lake

Home By The Lake by Alya Supangkat I am from a messy bedroom, shared with my brother and sister. Toys lay on the floor, followed by books. I am from the quiet library, where endless books line the walls on shelves. Astounding adventures fill every single page. I am from satisfying holiday breaks, spent inside watching Charlie Brown on TV. I am from James Hill, where the hill reaches the sky. Rows and rows of sleds line up on top of the hill. Children’s laughter rings in the air. I am from the cozy dining room when winter comes, I snuggle in a blanket while drinking hot chocolate. I am from freezing winters, where frost covers the windows. I am from high winds and thunder. Hail showers and slush. I am from Ridgeville Park, where flowers bloom in springtime. I lie on the soft grass and smell the morning dew. I am from the hot and sweaty summers of Evanston. The beach fills up with delight every single roasting day. The cool lake water trickles down my spine, refres...

Ode to Papa

I never said thank you For sending me out when I cried. I never said thank you For playing with me at the park. I never said thank you For raising my spirits when I failed. I never said thank you For teaching me the lessons you learned. Now I say thank you For the hours spent throwing a football For the hours spent playing basketball For the hours spent jogging around the neighborhood For the hours spent doing math For the hours spent on a road trip For the hours spent just talking And for everything. For everything, I say thank you. This isn't much, but it's all I could do. Happy birthday to you. -moyo, on your 46th birthday

Renjana

ren·ja·na   n  rasa hati yang kuat (rindu, cinta kasih, berahi, dan sebagainya) dedicated to my very own Re It was unusually cold when I woke up that morning. I gripped my quilt, and wrap3d myself up like a burrito. Suddenly, Raehan burst through my room door. "Mas!" He exclaimed, calling me as the only thing he has known to call me. I groan. I want to sleep, and Raehan that early in the morning equals to no sleeping in. "Mas Hekaall!" Raehan went on to shaking my body. I rolled up into a ball. "It's a snow day!" Raehan cried when I finally sat up. Raehan layed on top of my blanket, making "snowangels". "Well, you didn't have to wake me up." I replied. "I thought you'd like to know," Raehan frowned. "Alright," I quickly got out of the bed. "Race you outside!" Re and I ran, grabbing our coats and snowpants along the way. As I bolt to the apartment door, Mom got in my way. "Hey, where...

Haikal dan Re, an excerpt

Raehan menyeringai, menghampirinya. "Aku gak suka kopi, sekalipun dari kedai kopi termahal."                 Haikal tertawa, lalu tetap menyodorkan minuman di tangannya. "Hot cocoa buatanku, resep lama Bunda. Favoritmu, bukan?"                 Dengan mobil Haikal, mereka menyususri jalan Downtown Chicago, hingga sampai ke Evanston di tepi kota. Sepanjang perjalanan, Raehan sibuk menatap ke luar jendela. "Kamu suka?" Tanya Hai...

Dewi Sartika: A National Hero

Dewi Sartika came from an upper-class family. As a child, she received both Sundanese and Western education, whereas most people, especially women received no education at all. She also liked to play school, and loved being the teacher while playing it. She taught her friends reading, writing, etc.. So as you can see, Dewi Sartika has had a talent for teaching and a passion for education ever since she was little. In 1904, Dewi Sartika established a school so women can also get an education, as she had. The school was named Sekolah Isteri . Sekolah Isteri got a lot of positive remarks, and more and more students became students. In 1910, Sekolah Isteri was changed to Sekolah Keutamaan Isteri , also adding a few more school subjects. So, what can we learn from the famous Dewi Sartika? For one thing, don't be afraid to start first. People often wait for someone else to do something, and then they follow up to do it. The problem here is they are afraid to be wrong, to make mist...
